Lifestyle Disease and Aroma Therapy

A lifestyle disease is a disease linked to the way a person is living. Lifestyle diseases is an umbrella term that refers to the ailments primarily caused by the daily habits or unhealthy behaviors of people. A World Economic Forum report says India will suffer a loss of more than $200 billion due to improper diets and improper lifestyle. The report further revealed that 60% of the global deaths in 2005 happened due to noncommunicable diseases. The worst part of it is, nearly 80% of the deaths are occurring in nations like India where a majority of the people belong to low-income and middle-income groups. Also, in these countries, there’s a growing burden of nutritional deficiencies, infectious diseases, poor maternal and perinatal conditions. Improvement in living conditions, sanitation, health awareness, and timely available medical facilities will lead to a decrease in the incidence of communicable and noncommunicable diseases.

Risk Factors for Lifestyle Diseases:

Behavioural risk factors such as excessive use of alcohol, bad food habits, eating and smoking tobacco, physical inactivity, wrong body posture and disturbed biological clock increase the likelihood of NCDs. The modern occupational setting (desk jobs) and the stress related to work is also being seen as a potent risk factor for NCDs Behavioural risk factors such as excessive use of alcohol, bad food habits, eating and smoking tobacco, physical inactivity, wrong body posture and disturbed biological clock increase the likelihood of NCDs. Lifestyle Diseases versus Healthy Lifestyle Habits-

Lifestyle diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes are the leading causes of death and disability in all over the world. The combination of four healthy lifestyle factors maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, following a healthy diet, and not smoking seem to be associated with as much as an 80 % reduction in the risk of developing the most common and deadly chronic diseases.

Aroma therapy & how its work

Aromatherapy is the practice of using essential oils for therapeutic benefit. Aromatherapy has been used for centuries. It refers to a range of traditional, alternative, or complementary therapies and has been getting a lot of buzz recently for helping with everything from headaches to sleep to sore throats and body fatigue. Aromatherapy isn’t just about pleasant smells of essential oils, it is about the use of extracts from plants called essential oils, by either breathing them through your nose or putting them on your body and massage.

Experts think aromatherapy activates areas in nose called smell receptors, which send messages through nervous system to brain.

The oils may activate certain areas of brain, like your limbic system, which plays a role in your emotions. They could also have an impact on hypothalamus, which may respond to the oil by creating feel-good brain chemicals like serotonin.

Aromatherapy is normally used through inhalation or as a topical application.

Inhalation: the oils evaporate into the air using a diffuser container, spray, or oil droplets, or breathed in, for example, in a steam bath. Apart from providing a pleasant smell, aromatherapy oils can provide respiratory disinfection, decongestant, and psychological benefits.

Topical applications: massage oils, and bath and skin care products are absorbed through the skin. Massaging the area where the oil is to be applied can boost circulation and increase absorption.
